Technical Presentation Abstract:
In this seminar, you will learn a new approach to solving problems as we discover the optimum air conditioning system for a building. In most engineering classes, you were taught how to solve textbook problems where all the input variables were given to you. The deductive approach starts with the objective of the problem and works its way back to the inputs by applying equations to solve for any unknowns. This approach provides structure to open-ended problems.
We will discover how to find the best air conditioning system for a building by integrating economics with thermodynamics. Finding the optimum air conditioning system will benefit building owners, consulting engineers, and manufacturer representatives. Educators will benefit from this seminar with a new method to solve problems that better prepares their students for industry.

Dr. David Zietlow
Dr. David Zietlow is an emeritus professor of mechanical engineering at Bradley University. He joined ASHRAE in 1981 as a student member. He has nearly 30 years of experience in academia and nearly 10 years of industrial experience with a consulting engineering firm, a gas and electric utility and an automotive company. He has published a book entitled “Optimization of Cooling Systems.” Additionally, he has authored several technical papers on optimization of energy systems. In these publications he has demonstrated how to solve problems deductively.
