April 2015 Chapter Meeting, Past President, Life Member, and 45th Anniversay!

Please join us for the April Chapter meeting! This is a special event and is also our Past Presidents and Life Members celebration.  Oh yeah, its also our 45th anniversary!  Our meeting emphasis for the grassroots committees will be Student Activities.

Past Presidents, Life Members, and 50 Year Members have free registration!  Compliments of the Atlanta Chapter!!

We will also enjoy a discussion from the following speaker: 

ASHRAE Standard 189.1-2014 for High Performance Green Buildings       

Speaker: Dr. Thomas Lawrence, Ph.D, P.E. (speaker bio)

ASHRAE, in conjunction with the U.S. Green Building Council and the Illumination Engineers Society, have developed a Standard for High Performance, Green Buildings (Standard 189.1).  The Standard provides the minimum requirements for a high-performance green building, and was developed with the intent to provide a balance of environmental factors involved with designing, building, and planning for the operation of buildings.  This session provides a detailed look at the standard, the background on its development and updates on modifications made with the 2014 release, and what is foreseen for its application and ultimate adoption. 

5:30pm-6:30pm : Cocktail Hour

Come network with other industry professionals during our cocktail hour. Registered attendees will enjoy complimentary drinks while they last, so come early!

6:30pm-8:00pm : Dinner and Speaker

The dinner meeting will include a family style dinner cooked just for us. We will do introductions and provide updates on the Atlanta chapter, followed by the main presentation.

Parking: Free parking is available.  The restaurant is located at Cumberland Mall.

To attain accurate catering counts, please register for this event in advance. Registrations after April10th will result in an increased cost of $40.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Lawrence is the Mechanical Engineering program coordinator with the University of Georgia, and has over 30 years of professional experience.  Before going back for his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue, he spent approximately 20 of those years in industry and consulting.  He is the past chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.8, “Building Environmental Impact and Sustainability”, and is a member of the committee which wrote the ASHRAE standard on high-performance green buildings (Standard 189.1).  As an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, he gives presentations and workshops on green building design at venues around the world.  At the University of Georgia, teaches courses in HVAC, Green Building Design, Residential Building Design, and Heat Transfer.  His students have entered the ASHRAE Student Design Competition several years in the area of Integrated Sustainable Building Design, and three of the years the teams have earned second or third place in the contest.     

Dr. Lawrence has a B.S. with Highest Distinction honors in Environmental Science from Purdue University (1978), a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University (1982) and a second M.S. degree in Engineering Management from Washington University earned in 1989.  He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in the spring of 2004 researching the impacts of demand-controlled ventilation on energy consumption and indoor air quality in smaller commercial buildings.
