April is upon us as the Spring Atlanta ASHRAE schedule is in full swing. Henry Slack continues to deliver excellent programs as program chair of the chapter. In March we had Mr. Drue Crawley (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer) speak on the latest developments of Net Zero Buildings. He discussed the challenges and the advances that owners and designers encounter while trying to achieve this milestone. While there are several buildings that have accomplished being truly NET ZERO, the first cost make it difficult to achieve in most building built today. With the publication of the Advanced Energy Design Guides, ASHRAE is working to continue to strive to achieve this goal. There are several Advanced Engineering Design Guides available for purchase through the ASHRAE society bookstore including; K-12 Buildings, Small to Medium Office Buildings, Big Box Retail Buildings. Later this year ASHRAE is scheduled to release the guide for Hospitals.
We also had a great turnout for our past presidents lunch on March 16th as over 30 past presidents and life members attended. Ed Honda, the History Chair, did a great job organizing the event. Good food and fellowship was had by all as we recognized those who have served the chapter throughout the years.
On March 20th the Macon Sectional hosted ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Hoy Bohanon as he discussed the ASHRAE 62.1 Multiple Space Equation. We had over 20 members attend this event. Special thanks to Harris Sheinman and Caroline Calloway for organizing the event. We look forward to another great speaker on May 1st as the Macon Section hosts Marlene Linders to discuss Infection Control Risk Assessment. This is a must see for anyone who works in a hospital, designs work for a hospital, or has ever visited a hospital.
The month the chapter will host its final chapter meeting before the summer break on April 17th. ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Mr. Stan Mumma, will be discussing Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS). These systems are becoming more widely used and we look forward to an informative presentation. He will also be hosting a seminar before dinner on best design practices when using DOAS. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance.
We hope everyone will be able to come out and enjoy our annual May outing at the Georgia / Georgia Tech baseball game on April 24th. Bring the family and your glove as we enjoy BBQ before the game and root for your favorite Georgia College Team.
Sign up early on our website for our ASHRAE Spring Golf Tournament on May 16th. You can sign up an entire foursome or we will pair you up with other members if you sign up as an individual. If you are not a golfer you can still support the chapter by becoming a sponsor of this event. All proceeds go to support ASHRAE research. We need your support to make our goal of $44,000 before June 30th.
It is that time of year to elect our officers for the 2012-2013 ASHRAE year. The ballot can be found later in this newsletter or on our website. Please take a few minutes to review and approve your new slate of officers.
I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.
