This year has been a busy year so far and it is about to get busier.  Our biggest event of the year, the product show, hosted close to 600 people.  It was great to see everyone catching up with old friends and colleagues, but more importantly, meeting new people and catching some good leads for new business.  Our student chapters had a great showing and the students seemed to enjoy learning all about what we do as an industry.  A special thanks goes out to all of our sponsors and volunteers to make this show a great success.

April and May are all about ASHRAE.  We have several events of all types for everyone including baseball, golf, technical sessions, PE study sessions, a Macon meeting, and our new officer ballot is up for vote.

If you would like to hear more about our chapter and what we do, please contact me directly.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event!

Welcome back from Dallas to those of you who made it to the winter meeting and AHR expo.  We will be having our own expo right here in Atlanta.  March 6th is the biggest event of the year!  We are hosting a product show at the North Atlanta Trade Center.  Please book your booth or outdoor trailer spot ASAP.  We will also be inviting students and MEP firms looking to network with the best and brightest of the HVAC industry.

This month, February 23 at Red Hare Brewing is our YEA and refrigeration event.  Come join your fellow ASHRAE members and learn how important Beer, I mean, Refrigeration is to your everyday life.  We will be taking a private tour of the facility.

Our major themes this month are Membership and Research Promotion.  The most important part of being a member in ASHRAE is the opportunity to serve your industry and community.  The best way to serve is to become a leader in the chapter.  Now is the time to get involved as we are looking to fill a few key positions among the committees.  More info on volunteering is found in this edition.

Happy New Year from the Atlanta Chapter of ASHRAE!  We are currently in our 75th year of service to you, our members, and to the ASHRAE Society.    Next week is our first meeting of 2013, and we will start off right by discussing the complexities of controls in a panel comprised of your esteemed peers.  This is your chance to get some answers on controls.

Please sign up for the Product Show on March 6th to showcase your latest and greatest products or to come by and learn what is hot on the street.  We will be inviting students and MEP firms looking to network with the best and brightest of the HVAC industry.

Also in March we are hosting past presidents of the chapter for a luncheon.  Look for the sign up page on our website soon.

Our theme this month is Honors, Awards and Refrigeration.  We honor those that make history by awarding their efforts.  We had several Chapter Service Award winners this year and the best Student Activities Chair in the Region.  These great volunteers give strength to our great organization.

We also will be heading out to a brew tour next month, February 23 at Red Hare Brewing to taste refrigeration live and in person.

Our October meeting follows an excellent September turnout.  Dr. John Mench took us back to the basics to prepare us for the next level.  Now, we are going to Transform our existing buildings into green buildings with the help of Hank Jackson, P.E.  Hank will also give an encore 3 hour seminar following the lunch for a great discussion on problems and solutions when dealing with green upgrades and designs.

We should have our eye on two major themes this month as well.  Membership and Research Promotion are the life blood of ASHRAE.  Our members raise over $2 Million dollars every year for the benefit of a sustainable environment through intense research projects.  ASHRAE also benefits its members directly at meetings and events providing education and excellent networking opportunities.

The Atlanta Chapter is also giving back to the community by mentoring young students every Thursday afternoon in October through the (JAMS) Junior Achievement Means Success program.  We are actively seeking volunteers.

If you would like to hear more about our chapter and what we do, please contact me directly.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event!

It’s time to close another great Summer, and the Fall means ASHRAE is back on the scene.  Come join us as we kick off the 2012-2013 Atlanta ASHRAE season.  I am excited to invite you to examine ways our chapter can “Broaden ASHRAE’s Horizons” as directed by our Society President Tom Watson.  The Atlanta Chapter is planning community sustainability projects to share ASHRAE’s knowledge with other organizations to make the world better.  Please contact me if you would like ASHRAE to help out with sustainability in one of your favorite charities.

Speaking of sustainability, we are encouraging our student members to apply for the many scholarships ASHRAE has to offer nationally and regionally.  This opportunity is tremendous when considering the high cost of a good education.  Our Honors and Awards Committee is determined to help our future members get the education needed for our high tech industry.

The Atlanta Chapter will also be hosting events for our members in the 35 and under demographic (YEA).  These events will be centered on fun, networking and learning.  I consider the YEA members to be the future leaders in the industry and we need our wise veterans to share the great legacy that is ASHRAE.

I must thank our generous donors from this past year for their support of ASHRAE research.   We have listed them in this edition of the newsletter and will be posting our current year donors in future editions.  Thank you for your support for ASHRAE Research.  With your research dollars we are able to create a better world and a higher standard of living for our future.

If you would like to hear more about our chapter and what we do, please contact me directly.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event!

April is upon us as the Spring Atlanta ASHRAE schedule is in full swing.  Henry Slack continues to deliver excellent programs as program chair of the chapter.  In March we had Mr. Drue Crawley (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer) speak on the latest developments of Net Zero Buildings.  He discussed the challenges and the advances that owners and designers encounter while trying to achieve this milestone.  While there are several buildings that have accomplished being truly NET ZERO, the first cost make it difficult to achieve in most building built today.  With the publication of the Advanced Energy Design Guides, ASHRAE is working to continue to strive to achieve this goal.  There are several Advanced Engineering Design Guides available for purchase through the ASHRAE society bookstore including; K-12 Buildings, Small to Medium Office Buildings, Big Box Retail Buildings.  Later this year ASHRAE is scheduled to release the guide for Hospitals.

We also had a great turnout for our past presidents lunch on March 16th as over 30 past presidents and life members attended.  Ed Honda, the History Chair, did a great job organizing the event.  Good food and fellowship was had by all as we recognized those who have served the chapter throughout the years.

On March 20th the Macon Sectional hosted ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Hoy Bohanon as he discussed the ASHRAE 62.1 Multiple Space Equation.  We had over 20 members attend this event.  Special thanks to Harris Sheinman and Caroline Calloway for organizing the event.  We look forward to another great speaker on May 1st as the Macon Section hosts Marlene Linders to discuss Infection Control Risk Assessment.  This is a must see for anyone who works in a hospital, designs work for a hospital, or has ever visited a hospital.

The month the chapter will host its final chapter meeting before the summer break on April 17th.  ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Mr. Stan Mumma, will be discussing Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS).  These systems are becoming more widely used and we look forward to an informative presentation.  He will also be hosting a seminar before dinner on best design practices when using DOAS.  We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance.

We hope everyone will be able to come out and enjoy our annual May outing at the Georgia / Georgia Tech baseball game on April 24th.  Bring the family and your glove as we enjoy BBQ before the game and root for your favorite Georgia College Team.

Sign up early on our website for our ASHRAE Spring Golf Tournament on May 16th.  You can sign up an entire foursome or we will pair you up with other members if you sign up as an individual.  If you are not a golfer you can still support the chapter by becoming a sponsor of this event.  All proceeds go to support ASHRAE research.  We need your support to make our goal of $44,000 before June 30th.

It is that time of year to elect our officers for the 2012-2013 ASHRAE year.  The ballot can be found later in this newsletter or on our website.  Please take a few minutes to review and approve your new slate of officers.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.

As we move into March, our chapter continues to thrive in 2012.  We had another packed house for our February lunch meeting.  Adam Bare (Associate Partner with Newcomb & Boyd), Greg Spiro (Georgia Tech Engineering), and Trevor Wolf (Georgia Tech Grad Student), shared their experiences and ongoing technologies used at the new Georgia Tech Clough Research Building on Campus.  The team used several features in the design of the building that include; Demand Control Ventilation, Heat & Energy Recover, Outside Air Monitoring, Metering, Occupancy sensors, Natural Lighting, use of Variable Frequency Drives, and the use of Photovoltaics.  They also are using people counters, building dashboards, and enhanced measuring to help evaluate and operate the systems.  Through the continued commissioning process they will study the effects of these design features and try to determine way to continue to improve the efficiency of the building along with monitoring the current technologies.  Thanks again to Newcomb & Boyd and Georgia Tech for giving us a behind the scene look into their building.

We also had a great time attending the Sweetwater Brewery Tour at the end of February.  Thanks to Mark Dahir for setting up the tour and the fun.

This month we have Mr. Drew Crowley, an ASHRAE distinguished lecturer, will be speaking to the chapter on Advanced Energy Design Guides.  He will provide an overview at lunch and then get into a more in depth discussion in an afternoon educational seminar.  ASHRAE and its members continue to work towards Net Energy Buildings and he will be discussing the path to achieving these results.  Don’t miss this important meeting on March 13th.

The following week the chapter will be traveling south to Macon to hold a dinner meeting on March 20th.  Hoy Bohanon will discuss using ASHRAE 62.1 using multiple space equation that is required by code in many areas.  He will discuss the practicality of the equation and how to use it properly.  Please make the less than two hour drive south for this important meeting and support our Macon Section.  Please RSVP to cccalloway@bellsouth.net.

This month we will focus on research promotion.  We look forward to recognizing our sponsors of our chapter.  Each dollar raised by the chapter is used to further research funded by ASHRAE.  Without your help the society cannot continue to provide all of the valuable standards used every day in our world.  If you have not already done so please contact John Pruitt to make a donation to ASHRAE at John.D.Pruitt@jci.com.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.
