April Presidents Message

April is upon us as the Spring Atlanta ASHRAE schedule is in full swing. Henry Slack continues to deliver excellent programs as program chair of the chapter. In March we had Mr. Drue Crawley (ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer) speak on the latest developments of Net Zero Buildings. He discussed the challenges and the advances that owners and designers encounter while trying to achieve this milestone. While there are several buildings that have accomplished being truly NET ZERO, the first cost make it difficult to achieve in most building built today. With the publication of the Advanced Energy Design Guides, ASHRAE is working to continue to strive to achieve this goal. There are several Advanced Engineering Design Guides available for purchase through the ASHRAE society bookstore including; K-12 Buildings, Small to Medium Office Buildings, Big Box Retail Buildings. Later this year ASHRAE is scheduled to release the guide for Hospitals.

We also had a great turnout for our past presidents lunch on March 16th as over 30 past presidents and life members attended. Ed Honda, the History Chair, did a great job organizing the event. Good food and fellowship was had by all as we recognized those who have served the chapter throughout the years.

On March 20th the Macon Sectional hosted ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Hoy Bohanon as he discussed the ASHRAE 62.1 Multiple Space Equation. We had over 20 members attend this event. Special thanks to Harris Sheinman and Caroline Calloway for organizing the event. We look forward to another great speaker on May 1st as the Macon Section hosts Marlene Linders to discuss Infection Control Risk Assessment. This is a must see for anyone who works in a hospital, designs work for a hospital, or has ever visited a hospital.

The month the chapter will host its final chapter meeting before the summer break on April 17th. ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer Mr. Stan Mumma, will be discussing Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS). These systems are becoming more widely used and we look forward to an informative presentation. He will also be hosting a seminar before dinner on best design practices when using DOAS. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance.

We hope everyone will be able to come out and enjoy our annual May outing at the Georgia / Georgia Tech baseball game on April 24th. Bring the family and your glove as we enjoy BBQ before the game and root for your favorite Georgia College Team.

Sign up early on our website for our ASHRAE Spring Golf Tournament on May 16th. You can sign up an entire foursome or we will pair you up with other members if you sign up as an individual. If you are not a golfer you can still support the chapter by becoming a sponsor of this event. All proceeds go to support ASHRAE research. We need your support to make our goal of $44,000 before June 30th.

It is that time of year to elect our officers for the 2012-2013 ASHRAE year. The ballot can be found later in this newsletter or on our website. Please take a few minutes to review and approve your new slate of officers.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.

February 2012 President's Message

January was an exciting month for the Atlanta Chapter. After returning from the holiday break, we had an excellent meeting discussing Variable Refrigerant Flow on January 10th to a packed house. John Brantley gave an informative discussion on the efficiency and operation of using a variable refrigerant system. Thanks to Henry Slack for continuing to bring some great programs to our chapter member.

The winter meeting and show was a big success. The number of exhibits and visitors at the show were records despite the difficulties in flying into Chicago that Friday.

ASHRAE Society has a brand new logo and a completely revamped website. Go to ASHRAE.ORG and take a look

Starting in 2013 the DRC will no longer sit on Members Council.

Each region will have a separate person to sit on Members Council. This person will be nominated by the CRC caucus and appointed by the Society president, very similar to way ARC’s are now.

Tom Phoenix, from the North Piedmont Chapter, a past DRC in Region IV was nominated as Treasurer of Society. He will be on the annual ballot this spring and to start his term as society Treasurer this July. That puts him in line to be our society president in 2014‐2015. CONGRATULATIONS Tom!!

Update to Standard 189

ASHRAE, IAMPO Sign MOU to Advance Building Environment Codes and Standards

The Atlanta Chapter also sponsored two students to attend the Winter ASHRAE meeting in Chicago. Sam Birdsong and Ben Sleister both learned about all aspects of all industry and hopefully started to form some building blocks to a long career in the HVAC industry

In February, we have a special Valentine’s Day special with a cast study on the Georgia Tech Clough Building. This project had an extensive design process and Georgia Tech is using the building as a research center. The discussion with focus on the concept of the building and what is currently going on in the building. We will have Adam Bare, the lead mechanical engineer on the project; Gregory Spiro, the senior mechanical engineer for Georgia Tech; and Trevor Wolf, who is a graduate student, will discuss his involvement in some of the research projects in the building.

This month we will focus on refrigeration, which is the reason that ASHRAE exists today. We will be having a brewery tour on February 25 at 2:30 PM. We look forward to seeing all the members join us for this event.

I look forward to seeing you at our next chapter event.

June 2011 President's Message

What a great ASHRAE year. We held our last meeting in May and now it’s time to transition from the old to the new. As we make this transition let me say once again that I have had a great time.

What did we accomplish? Some of the things that were accomplished during the past year were to get more volunteers to come on board and help with task that make your life easier. The Chair/Co-chair concept worked very well. This concept provided first time ASHRAE volunteers the opportunity to learn about ASHRAE responsibilities as they helped the chairperson on the different committees.

We provided guidance and mentorship to a new student chapter being created at DeKalb Technical College. This new chapter will be voted on later this month at the ASHRAE Summer Conference in Montreal, Canada.

We had a net increase in the incoming vs. outgoing membership.

We again participated in the Annual Red and Green Scene Holiday event held at the Mason Muir Art Gallery. This event is a party jointly participated in by members of AIA Atlanta Chapter, USGBC Georgia Chapter, IIDA Georgia, ASHRAE Atlanta Chapter, ASPE Atlanta Chapter, CSI Atlanta
Chapter and GSEA. This event gives all organizations the opportunity to gather socially, and enjoy the company of members of allied organizations.

We sponsored two ASHRAE Golf Tournaments and an ASHRAE Hockey Night. Each event was well received by you, our members. All proceeds from these events were donated to ASHRAE Research. This chapter pledged to raise and donate a whopping $44,000.00 to ASHRAE Research this year. Thanks to you, we exceeded this goal by over $200.00. Way To Go Atlanta!

We implemented the new chapter website in January 2011. The new site is more user friendly with much greater flexibility to track user activities and to update event data. This new site is being managed by our own members for greater and faster response.

We revamped the newsletter to make it more warm and easier to navigate.

I could go on and on but it’s time to stop. Thank you to the committee persons who worked with dedication and commitment to make this year a success. Finally, thank you to our members who we work for. You are the reason that ASHRAE is the leading authority in this industry.

May 2011 President’s Message

Our last meeting is in a few weeks – then, we break for summer. I don’t know about you, but I have had a great time. It has been a pleasure to serve as your president and to work with the dedicated volunteers who have made this year a success. I hope that you as Atlanta chapter members have enjoyed the programs and events, which were put together by this great staff.

What is the Building Energy Quotient Labeling Program? The Building Energy Quotient (BEQ) Labeling Program is a tool, which rates a building’s energy performance and helps to characterize specific buildings that are candidates for improvements. This BEQ labeling program is used for both new and existing buildings. The buildings performance is shown on a color-coded scale that is easy to understand. The color-coded scale goes from A+ to F, with A+ indicating a building with a net zero energy use and F indicating a building performing unsatisfactory with respect to energy use.

Why do we need another ASHRAE program? The new Building Energy Quotient Labeling Program seeks to answer that question. It is intended to help owners and operators understand the energy use of their building and to recognize the potential for operating at greater energy efficiency levels. I know that you will find this presentation extremely informative.

Membership Promotion Highlights for May 2011

From: Samir Sheth, ASHRAE Atlanta Chapter Membership Promotion Chair

Thank you for supporting ASHRAE. Last year we were second place for membership enrollment of ASHRAE Region IV, and we want to be at first place in our region this year. I can’t accomplish the task by myself. I need your help. As your Membership Promotion Chair, I request all of you to be messengers for our society and ask your friends, staff, and colleagues to become members of our society. You can also reach the society thru Internet, just type “ashrae.org” and follow the menu. Let’s make a joint effort to increase membership for this year.

Membership Advancement: This year we have received very few membership advancement applications. I encourage each of you to check your membership status. You may be an Associate Member, but if you are in the HVAC professional field with multiple years of experience, you may be eligible to be a Member. It does not cost you any money. You simply need to visit ashrae.org and update your bio. Update your bio menu is located on the left had Member Central panel on the web page.

Delinquent: Like most of us, I am sure that you are very busy. If you are delinquent on you society dues or chapter dues please take a moment and visit the ASHRAE web site to update both. Our Chapter gets demerits for every member who is behind on dues.

Life Members: I have a special request for our highly respected Life Members and Associate Life Members. If you are a Life Member, please go on line and fill out a membership renewal form. Without filling out the form, your membership is called delinquent, and our Chapter gets a small demerit.

New Members: Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the following new members who enrolled during the period of March 2011 thru April 2011: Amandi Rhett, Clay Willoughby, Paul Partner, Carl Garofalo, Machelle Pellegrini, Giles Brown, Jeffery Morgan, Andy Proctor, Harry Engert, Matthew Stone, Jonathan Thomas, Tom Thompson.

Thank you again for supporting our society and our Atlanta chapter. Let’s work together to make our chapter the leader of the region again.

If you have any question/concern about membership, please feel free to call me,

Samir Sheth – 404-848-5691 or email me at ssheth@itsmarta.com.

April 2011 President's Message

I hope you have enjoyed the chapter’s presentations to date. We are winding down the year with just two meetings left. And they are exciting topics, which will benefit us all. You, our members, have been great in participating and providing feedback on chapter activities. In March we had a brewery tour, a hockey night. Those events were well attended a provided fun for all. We were also pleased to host the 3 annual
Past Presidents Luncheon at Vila Christina Restaurant. Thank you to all of the past presidents who participated. We will see you again next year.

Our upcoming meeting will be a lunch meeting held at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 11:30 am. The title of this meeting is “Why Commissioning Is Here To Stay - A Round Table Discussion”. Our presenters are Mr. Jay Enck, CxBGS, Mr. Stephen R. Wiggins, Newcomb & Boyd and Mr. John McFarland, Working Buildings.

After the lunch meeting we will have a 3-hr Educational Seminar entitled “Commissioning The Right Way – A Panel Discussion” Our presenters will be the same as the lunch seminar. This seminar will be held at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 1:30 pm.

What is Commissioning? Well, Wikipedia defines commissioning for several areas. Project Commissioning is defined as the process of assuring that all systems and components of a building or industrial plant are designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to the operational requirements of the owner or final client. This is the area that we as engineers, architects, designers and building operators are concerned with.

Is it worth the time and cost to commission a project? Does commissioning actually assure that the systems are functioning properly? These questions and more will be addressed at the upcoming meeting. I know that you will find this presentation and educational seminar extremely informative.

Have you signed up for the ASHRAE webcast on Thursday, April 21? You can go to ASHRAE.org and sign up now. The topic of the webcast is “Ground Source Heat Pump System – Putting The Earth To Work For You”.

Also, plan to bring your family and attend the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech Baseball Game. The game will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at 5:00 pm. The game will include barbecue dinner, in the parking lot.

Finally gear yourself up for the Spring Golf Tournament. Details will be coming soon.

Please plan to attend these events and spread the word. Look inside for details on registration.

Don’t forget to RSVP for the next meeting by logging onto the Atlanta ASHRAE http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/

To improve the quality of life and to answer tomorrow’s questions through research TODAY. The Research Promotion Campaign annually raises funds to support ASHRAE’s research program. It is conducted by the Society’s membership through local chapter volunteers and receives over 7,000 contributions each year from the membership and companies associated with the HVAC&R industry. When you pay dues, attend a chapter sponsored golf tournament or participate in events such as the upcoming Hockey Night, you contribute to ASHRAE’s Research promotion campaign.

All proceeds raised through the research promotion effort go directly to research projects. For more information, read An Introduction to ASHRAE’s Research Program (.pdf).

Student Activities is a vital part of the ASHRAE mission. It is our goal to continually interest and inspire young people to take up the causes and beliefs which ASHRAE shares and to explore the never-ending possibilities through knowledge and research. The objectives of student activities are

to:

Promote math and science to K-12 students and describe how the study of math & science can lead to an exciting career in engineering

Encourage the study of HVAC&R

Promote careers in the HVAC&R industry

Introduce ASHRAE student membership

Support existing ASHRAE student branches and encourage the development of new ASHRAE student branches

Promote grant and design competition program.

Please remember that you are a vital part of this student activities mission.

March 2011 President's Message

Where has the time gone? We are in the swing of the ASHRAE year and going strong. The Winter Meeting and Expo in Las Vegas was one of the largest attended expos in many years. It was a great experience. We will be busy for the remainder of the year, bringing you interesting, informative meetings and great social outings.

Our upcoming meeting will be a Dinner Meeting held at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 6:30 pm. The title of this meeting is “ASHRAE Standard 189”, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Our presenter is Dr. Tom Lawrence, P.E., LEED AP, University of Georgia Professor.

Before the dinner meeting we will have a 3-hr Educational Seminar presented by Dr. John Mench, PhD, P.E., LEED AP, Instructor at Southern Poly Tech University. The title of this seminar is “Back To Basics”. This seminar will be held at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 2:30 pm.

The energy efficiency goal of Standard 189.1 is to provide significant energy reduction over that in ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007. It offers a broader scope than Standard 90.1 and is intended to provide minimum requirements for the pre-planning, design, and construction of high
performance green buildings. This new standard for the design of high-performance green buildings is set to reform the building industry.

During the dinner meeting you will learn about the environmental impact on buildings, ventilation methods, integrated design processes, part-load design processes, building labeling programs and so much more. This presentation will be very informative for your everyday use.

Dr. Mench will discuss the how and why of engineering concepts, ideas and design guidelines. This will be an informative presentation on doing things the right way. Don’t miss this presentation!

As I mentioned above we will be busy with upcoming meetings and activities. Please plan on attending the Sweetwater Brewery Tour here in Atlanta on Saturday, February 26th. We will tour the beer making facility and sample the product. The tour is free.

Also, plan to attend the Gwinnett Gladiators Hockey game, which includes all you can eat dinner, arena tour and a Gladiator Jersey. The game will be on Saturday, March 5. Please plan to attend these events and spread the word. Look inside for details on registration.

Don’t forget to RSVP for the next meeting by logging onto the Atlanta ASHRAE website: http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/
February 2011 President's Message

Well I hope you all had a great time playing in the snow and ice a few weeks ago. I cannot remember when we had to cancel a meeting due to bad weather. For the safety of the members canceling the meeting was definitely the right thing to do. Don’t worry; we rescheduled the Commissioning meetings to the April date. So just like the circus - the show must go on.

Our upcoming meeting will be a lunch meeting held at ASHRAE Headquarters on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at 11:30 am. The title of this meeting is “Governmental impact on HVAC issues”. Our presenter is Mr. Mark R. Ames, the Manager of Government Affairs for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Congress and the Administration are moving to achieve ambitious energy efficiency goals for buildings. But what does this mean for the codes and standards community, and what changes can we anticipate in the future? What impact will the 2010 congressional and gubernatorial elections have for our industry and priorities?

Come to hear the answers to these questions, and see the multidimensional ways that ASHRAE is working to use our technical expertise to inform and improve public policy to serve humanity in order to promote a sustainable world.

Also, remember that the ASHRAE Winter Conference will be held in Las Vegas on the last weekend in January. The International Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Expo will also be held at this time. This is the largest HVAC event in the world. Please plan to attend this event and spread the word. Look inside for details on registration.

Have you used the new website yet? We are very excited about the functionality and capability of the site. Atlanta ASHRAE chapter committee personnel manage this site in order to better serve you as members. Take some time to go through the site and help us make it better. Your comments and suggestions are needed to make the site as user friendly and as functional as possible. So let’s talk.

The months of February and March will be filled with events, which you do not want to miss. We will have a YEA meeting on Thursday, February 17. All ages are welcome to come and mingle at this event! We have a field trip planned for the Sweetwater Brewery here in Atlanta on Saturday, February 26. We will tour the beer making facility and sample the product also. Saturday, March 5 will be our Gladiator Hockey game, which includes all you can eat dinner, arena tour and a Gladiator Jersey. As you can see it’s full steam ahead for the remainder of the ASHRAE year.

Don’t forget to RSVP for the next meeting by logging onto the Atlanta ASHRAE http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/

Regards,
Chapter Highlights: Refrigeration

During each meeting we focus on a specific aspect of the chapters involvement. This meetings emphasis will be on refrigeration. Refrigeration is the very reason why ASHRAE exist. Did you know that the Amour Building in Kansas City, Missouri, was the first office building to install an air-conditioning system? Each room is individually controlled with a thermostat that operates dampers in the ductwork, making it also the first office building to incorporate individual "zone" control of separate rooms. What year did this occur?

In keeping with the refrigeration theme, please note your calendar for Saturday, February 26th, and Saturday, March 5th. We have special events planed for those days involving refrigeration tours.

First, on Saturday, February 26 you are invited to tour the Sweetwater Brewery located at 195 Ottley Drive N.E., Atlanta, GA. 30324 (I-85 at Monroe Drive). The tour will begin at 2:30pm and last for approximately 30 minutes. The tour is free! Everyone will have the option to purchase an $8 souvenir pint glass to sample beer after the tour. This is all during their regular open hours.

Second, on Saturday, March 5, you are invited to the Gwinnett Gladiator's Hockey Game & Refrigeration Tour. Ticket prices are $45 ($35 for kids under 16) this includes, the Hockey Game, All you can eat and drink, Behind the Scenes Refrigeration Tour & A Gladiator Jersey. Or you can pay $20 for game only.

Anyone is welcome to both events! You can find details and sign up on the chapters website.
